Mr. Orlando was promoted to Shodan by Mr. Mumpower in 1994. Since 2001 Sensei Orlando has continued his progression under Yamada Senta Sensei. Yamada Sensei was a student of Jigaro Kano Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba Sensei and Tomiki Sensei. |
What is Aikido? Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba Sensei from his background in jujutsu, fencing, aikijutsu and spear fighting. It was developed as an unarmed defense against armed or unarmed attacks. It has continued to evolve and in it's present form is an extremely effective self-defense system for men or women, regardless of size or strength. Aikido derives it's effectiveness from the principle of non-resistance. Rather than struggle with an attacker, a person trained in Aikido learns to blend with the strength and momentum of the attack enabling the defender to use his opponents strength for his own advantage. Aikido techniques attack the opponent's dynamic weak points, which result in unbalancing the opponent allowing the aikidoist to throw the opponent or to attack the physiological weak points (the joints) resulting in a submission hold or disabling technique.
What is Tomiki Aikido? The Tomiki system was developed by Kenji Tomiki Sensei, one of the top students of the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba Sensei. Professor Tomiki was the first student to attain the rank of 8th dan under Morihei Ueshiba. Professor Tomiki also attained the rank of 8th dan in Judo as a student of the founder of Judo, Jigaro Kano. From the influence of these two great martial artists and from his study of other systems of martial arts, Professor Tomiki developed his own style of modern Aikido. The most outstanding characteristic of the Tomiki style is it's systematic and logical system of teaching.
